My little weather station ...

... would perhaps have been a more appropriate title, since this is what this page is supposed to be about. Since January 1994 I try to measure the temperature and rainfall for each day.

The methods

Normally I would have to measure the temperature several times a day in order to calculate a meaningful average value, but as I do not have that much free time, I just used to get one value at 9.00am. At the end of each month I have then calculated the average for the whole month.
It is easier to measure the rainfall. I have small tube with a scale in the garden which is my pluviometer. This should be fairly exact.
Since July 2001 there is a very important change in my system: As I have got a Linux server running all day anyway, I added a thermometer to it which now acquires a new data point every 30 minutes. I built the hardware according to this page and I am confident that my temperatures are pretty reliable now, too.

A word on the graphical representation: I once learned in my geography lessons that one defines the vegetation zones of the earth by counting the "dry" and "wet" months of a year. By "dry" and "wet" the following is meant: Draw a graph with a line for the average temperature and the total amount of rainfall for each month. You have to choose your coordinate system in a way that 2 mm rainfall correspond to 1 degree Celsius and 0 degree Celsius and 0 mm rainfall fall into the same point. You will now have months where the temperature line is above the rainfall line, this we call the "dry" months and you will see months where there has been "more rain than temperature" which are the "wet" months.
I do not know if this system really makes sense, but I had to use some system and this has been my choice.

The result

OK, enough talk on the background, here are the values I got over the years (all values without warranty). The column "year" contains the average temperature for the whole year respective the total amount of rainfall.
